Most car batteries last a few years, depending on use and climate. A few simple habits help you get the full life out of yours.

Drive regularly

Short trips do not give the alternator time to recharge the battery. If the car stands unused for long, start it and drive for at least 15 to 20 minutes every week.

Switch off accessories

Lights, music and chargers left on with the engine off drain the battery quickly.

Keep terminals clean

White or green deposits on the terminals reduce the connection. A garage can clean them and apply protective grease.

Watch for warning signs

Slow cranking, dim lights at start-up or a battery warning on the dashboard mean it is time for a test. Getting it checked early is cheaper than a breakdown.

Get it tested during service

Ask for a battery health check during your regular service, especially before summer and winter.
