A long drive is the worst time to discover a problem. Most roadside breakdowns come from simple things: tyres, coolant, battery and fluids. Check these a few days before you leave, so there is time to fix anything.
Under the bonnet
- Engine oil level and condition
- Coolant level
- Brake fluid level
- Battery terminals clean and tight
- Belts and hoses without cracks
Tyres and brakes
- Pressure set for a loaded car (see the door sticker)
- Enough tread and no cuts or bulges
- Spare tyre inflated, jack and wheel spanner in the car
- Brakes without noise or vibration
Lights and visibility
Check headlights, high beam, indicators, brake lights and hazard lights. Clean the windscreen inside and out and top up the washer fluid.
Documents and essentials
- Registration certificate, insurance, PUC and licence
- First-aid kit and torch
- Phone charger, water and snacks
- Emergency contact numbers

If your service is nearly due, do it before the trip. A garage can check all of the above in one visit.
