Dashboard lights are your car's way of telling you something needs attention. The colour usually tells you how urgent it is.

Red: stop safely and check

  • Engine temperature: the engine is overheating. Stop, switch off and let it cool. Do not open the radiator cap while hot.
  • Oil pressure: low oil pressure can damage the engine quickly. Stop and check the oil level.
  • Battery / charging: the battery is not being charged. The car may stop when the battery runs down.
  • Brake warning: low brake fluid or a brake system problem. Get it checked before driving further.

Amber / yellow: check soon

  • Check engine: an engine or emissions fault has been detected. If it flashes, reduce speed and get it checked quickly.
  • ABS: the anti-lock system has a fault. Normal brakes still work, but ABS may not.
  • Tyre pressure (TPMS): one or more tyres are under-inflated.

Green or blue: information

These show that a feature is on, such as headlights, high beam or cruise control.

Check the manual

Symbols vary between makes. Your owner's manual has the full list. If a red light stays on, it is safer to book an inspection than to keep driving.
