Electric scooters have fewer moving parts than petrol scooters: no engine oil, spark plug or clutch. That does not mean no maintenance. A little care keeps the range and the battery healthy.

Charge sensibly

  • Use the charger provided by the manufacturer
  • Follow the manual on charging levels; many recommend not running the battery to empty regularly
  • Avoid charging immediately after a long, hot ride; let the battery cool first
  • Charge in a dry, ventilated place, away from flammable items

Protect from heat and water

Park in the shade when you can. Electric scooters are built to handle rain, but avoid riding through deep water, which can damage electrical parts.

Tyres and brakes

Correct tyre pressure has a big effect on range. Brakes still wear, even with regenerative braking, so get them inspected at every service.

Software and service schedule

Many scooters receive software updates. Follow the manufacturer's service schedule, which usually includes battery health checks.

Warning signs

A sudden drop in range, the battery getting unusually hot, swelling, or error messages on the display mean you should stop using it and have it checked by a trained technician.
