Brakes usually give plenty of warning before they become dangerous. Knowing the signs lets you fix them early, when repairs are simpler and cheaper.

1. Squealing or squeaking

Many brake pads have a small metal indicator that squeals when the pad is worn. If the noise continues, get the pads checked.

2. Grinding

A grinding sound often means the pad material is gone and metal is touching the disc. Stop riding or driving the vehicle as much as possible and get it checked quickly, because this damages the disc.

3. Soft or spongy lever or pedal

If the brake lever or pedal goes further than usual, there may be air in the brake fluid, low fluid or a leak.

4. Vibration when braking

A pulsing feel in the pedal or handlebar can come from an uneven disc.

5. Pulling to one side

If a car pulls left or right under braking, a brake on one side may be sticking or worn unevenly.

6. Warning light

The brake warning light can mean low fluid or a problem in the system. Do not ignore it.
