Rain, potholes and waterlogged streets are hard on two-wheelers. A short check before the season starts keeps you safe and avoids bigger repair bills later.

1. Brakes

Wet roads need more stopping distance. If the lever or pedal travels further than usual, or you hear grinding, get the brake pads and cables checked. Drum brakes also need adjusting after riding through water.

2. Tyres

Look for worn tread, cracks and bulges. Tyres with little tread cannot clear water and lose grip. Keep the pressure at the level printed in your owner manual, checked when the tyres are cold.

3. Chain

Rain washes lubricant away. A dry, loose chain wears the sprockets quickly. Clean and lubricate it every few hundred kilometres in the monsoon and keep the slack within the manual's limit.

4. Lights and horn

Visibility drops in heavy rain. Check the headlamp, brake light, indicators and horn before the first shower.

5. Electricals and battery

Water in connectors causes starting trouble. A mechanic can check the battery terminals and wiring and protect exposed connections.

When to book a service

If your last service was more than three months or 3,000 km ago, a general service before the rains covers most of this list in one visit.
