Overheating is one of the few problems where stopping quickly can save you from a very expensive repair. Learn what to do and what usually causes it.

If the temperature warning comes on

  1. Switch off the AC and turn on the heater to full: it moves heat away from the engine.
  2. Find a safe place to stop and switch off the engine.
  3. Do not open the bonnet if you see steam pouring out; wait for it to settle.
  4. Never open the radiator or coolant cap on a hot engine. Hot coolant under pressure can cause serious burns.
  5. Once cool, check the coolant level and look for leaks.
  6. If you are unsure, call for help rather than driving on.

Common causes

  • Low coolant because of a leak
  • A radiator blocked by dirt or debris
  • A cooling fan that does not switch on
  • A faulty thermostat or water pump
  • A worn or broken belt

Prevention

Check the coolant level regularly, get the cooling system inspected before summer, and do not ignore small leaks under the car.

Get it checked

Even if the temperature returns to normal, have the cooling system inspected. Repeated overheating can damage the engine. Book a check with us and approve the estimate before any work starts.
